Introduction
- Managing traffic on long urban flyovers requires more than basic CCTV monitoring. Continuous vehicle movement, high traffic density, overspeeding, wrong-way driving, and frequent traffic rule violations make manual monitoring difficult for traffic authorities.
- For the G.D. Naidu Elevated Expressway, commonly known as the GD Naidu Flyover or Avinashi Road Flyover, the requirement was to improve road safety, strengthen traffic enforcement, and enable faster incident response through an intelligent and centralized monitoring system.
- To support this requirement, Katomaran Technologies deployed an AI-powered traffic monitoring solution using an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) and Video Management System (VMS). The project included the installation of 44 cameras across the 10.1 km flyover corridor and 15 display units for showing real-time traffic violation alerts.
- The solution helped authorities move from basic surveillance to automated traffic violation detection, real-time alerting, and centralized flyover monitoring.
The Challenge
- The GD Naidu Flyover handles continuous traffic movement with two-wheelers, cars, buses, commercial vehicles, and other road users. Since the flyover stretches across a long distance, monitoring the entire corridor manually was not practical.
- Traffic authorities needed a smarter system that could detect violations automatically, identify incidents faster, and provide better visibility across key entry, exit, and movement zones.
- The major challenges included:
- Frequent traffic violations across the flyover
- Difficulty in continuous manual monitoring
- Overspeeding and unsafe driving behavior
- Delayed accident and incident detection
- Lack of centralized real-time traffic visibility
- Need for faster enforcement and response
- Monitoring vehicle movement at ramp-up and lane-down areas
These challenges created the need for an AI-based traffic enforcement system that could monitor the G.D. Naidu Elevated Expressway continuously and support quick decision-making.
Katomaran Technologies’ Approach
- Katomaran Technologies designed and implemented a smart traffic monitoring solution tailored for the operational needs of the G.D. Naidu Elevated Expressway. The focus was not only on viewing live camera footage but also on detecting traffic violations, tracking incidents, and displaying alerts in real time.
- For this deployment, Katomaran Technologies installed:
- 44 cameras across the 10.1 km GD Naidu Flyover corridor
- 15 display units for real-time violation alert display
- ITMS software for AI-based traffic analytics
- VMS platform for centralized video monitoring and event management
The camera and display placement was planned based on flyover visibility, enforcement zones, and alert requirements. In critical areas, the camera and display distance was maintained around 60 to 90 meters, helping improve detection accuracy and alert visibility for enforcement teams.
This setup transformed the Avinashi Road Flyover into an actively monitored traffic corridor where violations and incidents could be detected automatically and reviewed from a centralized system.
The Solution Deployed
The complete solution was built using two core technologies: Intelligent Traffic Management System and Video Management System.
Intelligent Traffic Management System
The ITMS continuously analyzes live traffic video to detect violations, unsafe driving behavior, traffic congestion, stopped vehicles, and incidents. It helps traffic authorities take faster enforcement action without depending only on manual observation.
Video Management System
The VMS provides centralized live viewing, video recording, alert management, evidence review, and event tracking. Operators can monitor the full GD Naidu Flyover from a unified interface and quickly verify incidents using recorded video evidence.
Together, ITMS and VMS created a proactive traffic monitoring environment for the G.D. Naidu Elevated Expressway.
Section Speed Technology
- For speed enforcement, Katomaran Technologies used section speed technology instead of traditional radar-based speed detection.
- Radar systems usually measure the speed of a vehicle at a single point. However, section speed technology calculates the average speed of a vehicle between two camera points. This method is especially useful for long flyover corridors because it encourages drivers to maintain safe speed throughout the section, not just at one camera location.

Example
If a vehicle is detected at Camera Point A and later detected at Camera Point B, the system calculates the time taken by the vehicle to travel between the two points.
For example:
- Distance between Camera A and Camera B: 500 meters
- Time taken by the vehicle: 22 seconds
- Calculated average speed: 80 km/h
If the permitted speed limit is lower than the calculated average speed, the system generates a speed violation alert.
This approach is more suitable for flyover safety because it monitors driving behavior across a defined road section instead of checking speed only at one point.
AI Traffic Analytics for GD Naidu Flyover
Katomaran Technologies deployed multiple Al video analytics modules as part of the ITMS solution. These analytics helped improve traffic discipline, road safety, and incident monitoring across the G.D. Naidu Elevated Expressway.
The key analytics included:

Real-Time Violation Alert Display
- A major highlight of this project was the deployment of 15 display units across the G.D. Naidu Elevated Expressway. These displays were used to show real-time violation alerts and make traffic enforcement more visible on the ground.
- Instead of keeping alerts only inside the control room, the system displayed violation information in real time through the installed display network. This helped improve awareness and supported faster operational response.
- The real-time alert display system helped with:

- Better communication between monitoring teams and field teams

Centralized Monitoring and Event Review
