Introduction
- Securing a large solar plant is never simple, especially when the site stretches across a wide open area and valuable infrastructure remains exposed near the perimeter. For one of our customers operating a 40-acre solar plant, the biggest concern was not just monitoring the site, but preventing repeated copper wire theft.
- Thieves were targeting the fencing-side areas of the plant and cutting copper wires, creating a serious risk to both asset protection and plant operations. The customer needed a smarter way to watch the perimeter, detect suspicious activity early, and respond quickly from a central monitoring point.
- That is where Katomaran Technologies stepped in.

The Customer’s Challenge
- The customer’s solar plant covered a large outdoor area, making manual security monitoring difficult and inefficient. Since the theft activity was happening near the fencing, traditional surveillance methods were not enough to ensure full visibility or fast response.
- The customer needed a system that could help them:
- 1Prevent copper theft near the solar plant boundary
- 2Detect intrusion and loitering along the fencing
- 3Monitor the site from a command center room located at the beginning of the plant
- 4Receive real-time alerts whenever suspicious movement was detected
- 5Improve overall security without depending only on manual CCTV observation
Their goal was clear: build a proactive monitoring system that could help security teams see threats earlier and act faster.
How Katomaran Technologies Solved the Problem
- After understanding the site layout and the client’s security concerns, Katomaran Technologies designed a perimeter-focused surveillance approach tailored to the solar plant.
- Instead of treating the project like a standard CCTV installation, we focused on the actual problem areas — the fencing and perimeter zones where theft risk was highest.
- To strengthen visibility across the boundary, we deployed:
- - 69 cameras
- - 8 MP CCTV cameras
- - One camera for every 40 meters
- - Camera placement focused only near the fencing and perimeter
- This gave the customer better coverage across the plant boundary while keeping the monitoring strategy practical and targeted.
- At the heart of the deployment, we set up a command center-based monitoring model. The customer already had a room at the starting point of the plant, and that became the main control space where the entire perimeter activity could be monitored through our system.
The Technology Stack Used
To help the customer move from passive surveillance to intelligent site protection, Katomaran Technologies implemented a combination of:
- VMS (Video Management System)
- VA (Video Analytics)
- Face Recognition System for internal staff and security identification
This combination allowed the customer not only to view live camera feeds, but also to detect events automatically and manage alerts more efficiently.

What the System Now Detects
- Once deployed, the system enabled the customer to monitor and respond to a wide range of security situations across the solar plant perimeter.
- Key intelligence capabilities included:
| Solution | Description |
|---|---|
| Intrusion Detection | Our system detects when someone attempts to cross or breach the fencing area. |
| Loitering Detection | If any person stays too long near important perimeter sections or restricted areas, the system flags it immediately. |
| Restricted Zone Monitoring | Sensitive parts of the plant can be monitored more closely to reduce unauthorized movement. |
| Unauthorized Access Alerts | Security teams receive alerts when an unknown or unauthorized individual enters a protected zone. |
| Vehicle Movement Monitoring | Our system helps track vehicles moving in and around the solar plant for better visibility. |
| Real-Time Alerting | Instead of waiting for operators to notice an issue on-screen, alerts are triggered automatically when suspicious activity is detected. |
| 24/7 Monitoring Support | The site remains under continuous watch throughout the day and night. |
| Smart Event Review | Our customers can review important events faster without manually checking long hours of footage. |
| Remote Site Visibility | The solar plant can now be monitored more efficiently from the command center with better situational awareness. |
Components Deployed at the Site
CCTV Cameras
High-resolution 8 MP CCTV cameras were installed along the fencing to improve perimeter visibility and incident tracking.
Onboard Analytics
Analytics at the camera and system level helped identify suspicious behavior such as intrusion, loitering, and unauthorized access in real time.
VMS Platform
The Video Management System brought all camera feeds into a centralized interface, making it easier for the customer’s team to monitor the plant from the command center room.
Face Recognition System
Used internally to support staff and security identification, helping the customer strengthen access-related monitoring.
The Outcome for the Customer
- With Katomaran Technologies’ deployment in place, the customer gained a much stronger grip on solar plant security.
- What changed for them was not just camera coverage, but the way the entire site was monitored.
- They now have:
- 1Better visibility across the fencing and perimeter
- 2Faster detection of suspicious activity
- 3Real-time alerts for intrusion and loitering
- 4Centralized monitoring from the command center room
- 5Improved control over staff and security identification
- 6Easier event investigation through smart video review
Most importantly, the customer now has a system designed around their actual risk: copper theft at the perimeter.
Why This Project Matters
- Solar farms are often spread across large open areas, which makes them vulnerable to theft, trespassing, and delayed response. This case study shows that protecting such environments requires more than standard surveillance. It requires intelligent monitoring built around the site’s real vulnerabilities.
- By combining VMS, video analytics, high-resolution CCTV coverage, and internal face recognition support, Katomaran Technologies helped this customer transform their solar plant security strategy from reactive to proactive.
Conclusion
- For this 40-acre solar plant, the challenge was clear — repeated copper theft risk, perimeter vulnerability, and the need for a reliable alert and monitoring system. Katomaran Technologies addressed the problem with a focused deployment built around perimeter surveillance, real-time analytics, and centralized monitoring.
- The result is a smarter and more responsive solar plant security environment, where the customer can monitor the site from a command center, detect threats earlier, and improve protection across critical boundary areas.
- Katomaran Technologies continues to help solar plant operators build stronger, more intelligent security systems that match real on-ground challenges.
